Welcome to Historic Polegreen Church

Experience the peace of Historic Polegreen Church, a beautiful open-air church. Feel the breeze and the sunlight welcome you as you enjoy the story of Rev. Samuel Davies and how he started Historic Polegreen Church, one of America's first non-Anglican churches. You'll feel his story come to life as you stand where he stood to preach sermons to members of his congregation, including Patrick Henry.

The Church lies just 15 minutes outside of Richmond, in Hanover County—a quaint, rural suburb. The Church site features a Visitor's Center tucked away in the woods and rolling, grassy, greens, perfecting for picnicking or simply just to enjoy the Church's viewshed.

The Historic Polegreen Church Foundation acquires Pine Slash. The Historic Polegreen Church Foundation has concluded the acquisition of a beloved Patrick Henry icon. Pine Slash, circa 1750, is one of only two surviving original homes of Henry. Originally a 300-acre tract, part of Rural Plains near Totopotomoy Creek in Hanover County, it was given to Henry and his first wife, Sarah Shelton, when they were married in 1754 by her parents, owners of Rural Plains. It is often called the “Honeymoon Cottage.” Today, on the remaining five acres, besides the cottage, is a restored manor house, named Prospect Hill, circa 1830, and a carriage house, also dating from the 19th century.

Very unique historical location. Small site, but very interesting and well documented historical information. I learned some very interesting facts about the Polegreen Church and its role bringing religious freedom to Virginia. Also Patrick Henry's life and also his role at the church.
